Choosing A Great Pillow

SLEEP

Good quality of sleep is something that millions of people try to achieve, but cannot seem to get.  Obtaining an adequate quality of sleep can be compromised by a number of factors that you may or may not have even considered. One factor is simply having the wrong pillow.

If the pillow being used is not supportive or comfortable, muscles of the neck become tense, blood flow is decreased, and the brain is working overtime, when you are experiencing high stress levels.  A pillow that supports the structures of the neck, and that is comfortable, can help to reduce stress, allow muscle recovery, remove pressure, and enable the musculo-skeletal system to relax. A good pillow for sleeping should be comfortable to lay your head upon, but most importantly it must support your neck keeping it in alignment with the rest of your spine.  When the spine is correctly aligned, less stresses are placed on the joints and muscles of the neck while you sleep.

Choosing the right pillow is extremely important in achieving a good night’s rest.  A good pillow will support the neck by conforming to the exact shape of the sleeper, thus spreading out the weight evening and uniformly along the spine. Pillows are sometimes a cause of frustration for many and can also affect the shoulder.  The shoudler should not be placed at 90 degress to the mattress, as this can trigger spasms in the trapezius muscle.

There are many different pillows on the market today from traditional feather and fiber ones to shaped pillows, memory foam, water, and buckwheat pillows. It can be difficult to know what to choose.

There is no one “best” pillow for everyone. Everyone’s bodies and necks are different. There are four major criteria for picking out a pillow. Try these tips to pick the pillow that’s right for you.

1. Choose a size of pillow suitable for your body size or frame. The pillow should cover the entire back of your neck to avoid putting pressure on your spine. Try out the pillow. Most pillows are packaged in a plastic wrapper so you can lay it on a display bed in the store and put your head on it. This is the best way to find out if you are on the right track.

2. The pillow must feel comfortable.  It will help you to relax and help you get a good night’s sleep.

3. The pillow should be adjustable.  This will help the pillow to conform to your neck in various sleeping positions.  A pillow should mold to one’s individual shape and alleviate any pressure points.

4. A hypoallergenic pillow is a must if you suffer from allergies, but it is also a good choice for anyone.

A good quality, supportive pillow provides many benefits including a better night’s sleep, improved circulation, fewer aches and pains and even reduced snoring. Take your time and choose carefully. Your neck and back will thank you for it!
